False Alarm

Just checking email and enjoying an omelet, and got a bit of a start. It was an email to my diabloii.net account, from a well-known Diablo II producer who used to work at Bliz North and now works at Flagship. I took a minute to settle my nerves, in the process realizing just how much I want that job, or at least the chance to interview for it, and opened it up:
Subject: Flagship Studios' Community Manager Search.

Dear Elly, Rush, and Flux:

We are looking for a Community Manager/PR Assistant to join our staff. Please spread the word among your colleagues.

If you know someone we should contact directly, please let me know.

Here is the link: www.flagshipstudios.com
D'oh! Well, the good news from this is that at least they haven't already hired someone for it. I had been slightly concerned by that possibility, since they'd had the job posted for more than a week before I happened across it. Obviously not, though.

The waiting and wondering about this is doing me some good, though. I've told myself that every time I start daydreaming or worrying, I have to stop that at once, and work on my novel. And it's working. Plus, I've also told myself that when if I don't get the job, I have to forge my disappointment and frustration into action, and turn the heat of my failure into a creative light. Just two chapters to go, damnit!
Comments:

I should say that this isn't the entire email; there were also some nice comments about us being community leaders, and a happy holidays comment, etc. It's also a mail from an extremely nice man, one who once, shortly after Malaya and I did the v1.10 testing at Bliz north, mailed me to ask for a clarification of something. He wanted to hear exactly what i'd asked, since my question had gone to him through another person, who had spoken it to him while he was playing Tempest. Yes, old school arcade classic Tempest. How can you not like someone who didn't hear a question clearly because he was playing an arcade classic from around 1981. While at work!

They had quite a game room at Bliz North, and while I never considered playing anything it in during my 2 visits, since i had fresh hot d2 action to sink my teeth into, I hope that it's been at least partially-recreated in their new Flagship offices. I imagine it has, since i think the bliz north guys owned the games themselves. I'd add to it if I could. If I got hired i'd certainly find a way to truck my old gauntlet 2 machine up here from my dad's garage in San Diego.

Yes, my goal will always be to finish my novel(s) and be an author. It would be awesome to work at flagship for a few years in the meantime, but I will never get totally away from fiction, as i did during maybe the first 4 or so years on the d2 site (holiday short stories aside). My longterm goal is always to be a novelist and to contribute something at least semi-worthwhile to the world of literature.

As for blogging, I would keep doing this site, but i imagine i'd fall even further behind on archiving reviews and articles and such, and i'd also have a lot less time to blog. Plus, I couldn't blog about anything work-related, unless it was an amusing story that had nothing to do with the game(s) itself and didn't make anyone there look bad, etc. And what would be the fun in reading or writing that?

I also think it's a good sign. Companies like that are often open to people with the right fit even if their practical/tech skills need some expanding. Skills can be learned...the 'right fit' cannot.

I can't see why they wouldn't at least bring you in for an interview.
You must be hopping around the apt. with impatience/nervousness...but I'm glad it's resulting in more fevered novel work!

As an unrelated side note, I'm curious why you add a comment instead of editing the blog entry when you want to add something. Just so people will notice it more?

Kim, I figure people notice it less when I add a comment. Most probably just skim the main page; I know I don't often read comments on other blogs. Then again, few other non-political blogs I read ever have comments longer than a few words/worth reading.

I guess I think of adding more in comments as a sort of bonus for the curious/devoted.
