I wasn't going to comment on the Boy Scout deaths and disasters, except that there's such a good quote in today's recap article that I couldn't resist. On Monday, four Scout leaders were electrocuted in front of several Scouts after they lost control of the towering metal pole at the center of a large, white dining tent, sending it toppling into nearby power lines. The day before, a volunteer was taken to a hospital where he died of an apparent heart attack. On Wednesday, 40,000 Scouting enthusiasts waited hours in the stifling heat for an appearance by President Bush, who ended up postponing his visit due to the threat of severe thunderstorms. Sun-sick Scouts began collapsing and more than 300 people were treated for heat-related illnesses. "I don't think it's wise to make judgment on things that could've, should've, would've been done," Jamboree spokeswoman Renee Fairrer said. Well Renee, that would pretty well rule out making any judgments, on anything, ever again, now wouldn't it? No wonder Bush was going to visit them -- hell, he might have to hire this woman to do his PR; she already has the, "What, me take responsibility?" administration line down pat. And while I don't exactly agree with it, I also like Malaya's theory about this. She says God is punishing the scouts for their determinedly anti-gay policies and general attitude of homophobia. Do they have any of them blacks? #: 3:18 PM posted by Anonymous Well they have Girl Scouts, which are all women, and presumably their administrative chores are handled by bureaucrats of either gender. They do allow minorites too, though I think it's mostly a white organization. I assume they allow gay children to join also, all the better to "cure" them through the beauty of the outdoors and the vaguely-christian underpinings of the entire organization. #: 6:17 PM posted by Flux It's amazing how ignorat people can be when posting here. Bet you all sit infront of a mirror while typing so you can look at yourself. Here's a clue. Sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut (and hands off the keyboard) and look like a fool, then open your mouth (post) and prove you are one. I think you will find every race involved in scouts. I've seen all black troops (god forbid). Women who are scoutmasters. Women as den moms. Cubmasters, young women are in venture crews (a branch of the "boy scouts". So, if you people would spend alittle more time learning about the topic and less time fluffing your feathers to prove something (like being gay, black or female), you might learn something. #: 3:02 AM posted by Anonymous Anonymous probably has a point, and the scouts are probably a good thing in the vast majority of ways one could measure good things vs. bad things. It's a shame that all of that has been copletely overshadowed in the minds of so many outside observers by them stubbornly clinging to their anti-gay policies. I imagine pro-scouts people think it's ridiculous that the rest of us obsess over that one policy and ignore everything else good about the organization. At the same time, the rest of us wonder why the scouts would stick to their one bit of discrimination when it so overshadows all the other good things they do.
